Gadekirke Aarhus (street church)

A group of volunteers from various free churches and congregations in Aarhus and the surrounding area move the church to Store Torv every Friday evening at 21-24 all year round, almost regardless of the weather, to meet the passers-by with a free cup of coffee, cocoa or tea and a talk about faith.

The volunteers are easy to spot, because they wear yellow reflective vests with the text: GADEKIRKE (street church).

At Gadekirke you will be greeted with a smile and no condemnation. Everyone is welcome, whether you are young, mature or old, rich or poor, happy or discouraged, healthy or sick. No matter how you feel or what you believe, the volunteers want to bless you or pray for you. This is called prayers of intercession.

Intercession is to pray in one's own words for someone or something, to be inspired by God's Spirit. Guests often ask: Can you also pray for that? Because when they think of prayer, they think of the Lord's Prayer. Yes, we can ask for anything and God works through us with His power and can do much more than we ask or understand. That is His promise to us.

It is so encouraging to see how faithful God is. Many come back and tell us what God has done in their lives since they were prayed for or blessed in Gadekirke. It may be that their pain has disappeared, that they have got significantly better grades at school than usual, that they have felt a peace and joy that is completely new to them, that the door has been opened to their dream job, that their lives have been transformed by a single prayer, that life has suddenly become worth living.

The volunteers know that nothing is impossible for God, so at Gadekirke big prayers are said in the name of Jesus. For the volunteers, it is not just theory that God hears and answers prayer. The volunteers themselves have plenty of stories from their own lives that show that what is impossible for humans is possible for the living God, whether the problem is spiritual, physical, psychological or emotional.

The young people like to bring their friends to Gadekirke if their friends have been injured in the nightlife or at football during the week. That is why Gadekirke is also called the city's emergency room. Here we pray in faith to Jesus Christ, who is the Physician of Physicians. He gets all the glory! Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ really get something to think about when their pain suddenly disappears. It's like declarations of love to them.

God's Spirit touches hearts when we pray, and many want to know more about this Jesus to whom we pray. Therefore, they can get a free booklet, including the "Jesus-bogen" (The Jesus book) by Kjell Haltorp or "Vend om til Gud – Forstå det med Jesus" (Turn to God - Understanding Jesus) by Lars Hyldgaard Jensen.

The initiators of Gadekirke Aarhus are very pleased that congregations in other cities have been inspired to also go out into the street in yellow Gadekirke vests and meet the passers-by with God's love and no condemnation.

For as Christians, we are called to bring the good news about Jesus Christ and pray for the sick.

Gadekirke Aarhus started after God spoke the following to the congregation in Citykirken Aarhus:

I am the one who has begun my work in this city, and I am the one who will complete my work in this city, because I love Aarhus, I love the people of Aarhus, and I want to draw them close to me, and for that I have called you. I have made myself dependent on you. And I want you to be my hands and my feet to the people of Aarhus and bring the message of joy that I have given you. Bring the salvation, the healing, the grace that you have received for nothing. Pass it on for nothing to everyone you meet on your way. Give what you have received for nothing, pass it on for nothing, because I love the people of Aarhus and I want to do something new in Aarhus.”
